About Kathak
Kathak is one of the eight forms of Indian classical dances. Kathak is one of the main genres of ancient Indian classical dance and is traditionally regarded to have originated from the traveling bards of North India referred as Kathakars or storytellers.
These Kathakars wandered around and communicated legendary stories via music, dance and songs quite like the early Greek theatre. The genre developed during the Bhakti movement which is the trend of theistic devotion which evolved in medieval Hinduism. The Kathakars communicate stories through dance and mime which combine the two main elements of this dance style which utilize rhythmic foot movements, hand gestures, facial expressions and eye work. In traditional solo performances a dancer may represent all of the characters of a story through a rich repertoire of gestures, facial expressions and graceful movements of the limbs.
About Muskaan
I am Muskaan Gupta. I’m 17 years old and was born and raised in New Delhi, India. Dance and I go way back to 2010 when I was a three-year-old toddler dancing at festive functions. Looking at my interest and potential in dance, my parents suggested I learn Kathak (an Indian classical dance form) with my friends. At first, it was just about having fun and dancing with my friends, but I started appreciating the dance form over the years.
I began focusing on the smaller details, perfecting the mudras (hand gestures), posture, and balance with the grace and finesse that make Kathak the beautiful art form it is. I love how each dance piece has a laya (rhythm and speed, determined by the tempo) and it always ends at the right time in sync with the music.
My favorite part of Kathak has always been storytelling: stories of different Hindu deities or a village scene. It is an escape for me where I take a break from reality and assume the role of another character. My favorite dance step is and always will be the chakras (rounds); the chakras always make me feel so light and free, which makes it such a refreshing dance move; the number of chakras one can do at a high speed is a challenge I have always loved indulging in; and the way the traditional dress moves with the dancer and falls perfectly at the end of the chakras always mesmerizes me, as I have seen in many movies and performances.

Kathak Journey so Far
I started doing kathak classes with my friends when I was four years old. Besides learning kathak, taking the exams was always a fun experience as I got to dress up and put on make-up and jewelry, which made me feel older and more professional than I was.
I gave the beginner-level exam as soon as I was eligible, which was at age 6 in 2013. Since then I kept doing regular classes and practicing and preparing for the next exam. I cleared the primary and secondary first-level exams in 2015 and 2016 respectively after which there were changes in my journey as I started learning Kathak at Pandit Birju Maharaj’s Kathak Institute, Kalashram.
By March 2019, I had passed the primary second level according to their institute but I wanted a diploma from the widely recognized Akhil Bhartiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal Kathak Institute so I resumed preparing for that and took the exam in November 2019. Covid 19 took a toll on Kathak even though I tried keeping in touch through online classes as much as possible. I resumed Kathak in 2023 after my 10th boards and I have been doing classes since to prepare for the performance in October 2024.
